John M. Will Memorial Journalism Scholarship
John M. Will, for whom John Will Elementary School is named, was an education reporter for the Mobile Press Register newspapers in the 1950's and ‘60s. Will was an excellent observer and writer who was highly regarded by his peers and became legendary for his expertise. Each year, a committee made up of Mobile-area practicing journalists and journalism educators chooses winners of the John M. Will Memorial Scholarship. To be eligible: -- Students must be residents of Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Conecuh, Washington or Monroe County, Alabama; Santa Rosa or Escambia County, Florida; Jackson or George County, Mississippi. -- Students must be at a senior level in high school who will be enrolled full time at an accredited college or university in a course of study that relates to journalism, or a present college student whose hometown is in the eight-county area listed above. This year, a first-place winner and runner-up will be awarded, with the winner receiving as much as $5,000.
